Auxiliary: History

The Auxiliary of the Foundation of City College of San Francisco (CCSF) was founded in January of 2002. Six members formed the inaugural group which has grown through the years to over 130 members.

The Auxiliary’s mission is to provide volunteer services and financial assistance to CCSF, as well as to create outreach into the community in order to increase public knowledge and support of City College. Its only membership requirement is to purchase a ticket to the annual luncheon or to make a comparable donation to the Basic Skills scholarship fund.

The Auxiliary also founded the Guardian Scholar’s Closet on the Ocean campus. Auxiliary members and friends donate warm outerwear. which is then made available at no cost to Guardian Scholars (former foster children.)

Annually the Auxiliary publishes the “Red Book” of membership listings. The Auxiliary meets 3-4 time each year with a faculty member as guest speaker. Some topics have been the Diego Rivera Mural, tours of new CCSF buildings (Chinatown Campus, Wellness Center, the Educated Palate), and current faculty projects. Our original Auxiliary event was a performance of the opera Plump Jack – by local composer Gordon Getty, sung by CCSF music students!

From its inception the Auxiliary has been an outstanding fundraiser for CCSF! Over $3 million dollars has been raised for scholarships through income from its annual Basic Skills Luncheon. The luncheon brings together over 300 people to support Basic Skills students and listen to inspiring community speakers. A student speaker, usually a Guardian Scholar, is always featured on the program.

Wells Fargo Foundation and Chevron have generously underwritten the annual Basic Skills Luncheon since its inception. The luncheon also benefits from in-kind donations from the community, such as John’s Grill – wines, CDS Distributors – apples, Ghirardelli and Sees – chocolate, Steven Brown and the Horticultural Department at the College – flowers. The décor for the event is always created and contributed by Lewis Sykes, Event Designer.
